An adult brain uses ~110 calories per pound/day. The average adult brain weighs ~3 pounds, therefore burns roughly 330 calories daily. By comparison skeletal muscle (arms, legs, chest, etc. muscles) at rest burns ~6 calories per pound daily but during physical activities skeletal muscle can burn many more calories depending on the intensity of the activities. The greater the intensity, the more calories burned, whereas the brain’s calorie burn potential remains fairly constant.
